LexiFloat
for Linux.
An offline English dictionary for the Linux desktop. Free, no account.
Desktop 1.1.0 — latest release ·Flatpak or .deb ·x86_64
Search all 161,697 words by spelling or by meaning, keep a floating bubble on screen, and look up the word selected in any program with one shortcut. The whole dictionary is inside the download, so it works with no connection at all.
Flatpak (recommended)
Install it from a terminal in the folder you saved it to:
flatpak install --user ./lexifloat-1.1.0-linux-x86_64.flatpak
The first install also fetches the shared Freedesktop runtime from Flathub, which Flatpak apps run on. Network: the sandbox is given no network device, so the operating system prevents the app reaching the internet — the desktop version of the Android app's missing internet permission.
.deb for Ubuntu, Mint and Debian
Double-click it, or install it from a terminal:
sudo apt install ./lexifloat_1.1.0_amd64.deb
Network: the app contains no code that connects to the internet and never does; the operating system does not lock it out the way the Flatpak sandbox does.
Setting up the lookup shortcut
Linux desktops do not let a program claim a global shortcut itself, so bind it once in your keyboard settings (in Linux Mint: System Settings → Keyboard → Shortcuts → Custom Shortcuts). Use Ctrl+Alt+D and this command:
- Flatpak:
flatpak run com.lexifloat.LexiFloat lookup - .deb:
/opt/lexifloat/bin/lexifloat lookup
LexiFloat reads the selection directly and never touches your clipboard. If it does not appear in your applications menu straight after installing, log out and back in — some desktops only notice new apps at login.
Verify your download
Save SHA256SUMS next to the download, then in that folder:
sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS
It prints OK beside the file. Questions or a problem:
write and say what happened.
